Position Description:

The NSF REU Program in Erasure Coding for Distributed Machine Learning is recruiting undergraduate students in the School of Computing and Informational Sciences at Florida International University. We are looking for bright undergraduate students to get involved in research, starting from the summer of 2020 (actual starting date negotiable). Each student will be paired with a graduate student, and the focus is on “erasure coding for distributed machine learning.” However, the technology and skills learned from the project will have general applicability to research and practice in their future studies, especially in machine learning.The NSF REU Program in Erasure Coding for Distributed Machine Learning is recruiting undergraduate students in the School of Computing and Informational Sciences at Florida International University. We are looking for bright undergraduate students to get involved in research, starting from the summer of 2020 (actual starting date negotiable).

This program pays a stipend over the appointment. The stipend is paid either monthly or quarterly when project deliverables are met. As required by the solicitation and DCL, we request funding for $8,000 per student, for a total of $16,000. More details are as follows:
SUMMER 2020: $12/hour x 25 hours/week x 15 weeks = $4,500 x 2 students = $9,000
FALL 2020 & SPRING 2021: $12.5/hour x approx. 10 hours/week x 14 weeks = $1,750 x 2 semesters = $3,500 x 2 students = $7,000.
Total = $16,000

Hours; M-F, 25 or 10 hours/week. Schedules tailored to the student’s curriculum and class requirements.

information form. Explain what you have been studying / researching in your
academic program, how it is generally related to distributed computing.
– A Curriculum Vitae (1-2 pages)

Position Duties:

Qualifications:

Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Must be a US Citizen or permanent resident
- Minority students or students from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply
- Must be an undergraduate student at FIU in one of the majors: Computer Science, Computer Engineering
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Have good skills in programming. Sufficiency in Python is a big plus.
- Experience with Linux is a plus
