The Robotics and Digital Fabrication Laboratory (RDF) at FIU CARTA, is a state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research and development facility with robotic arms, Augmented Reality (AR) /Virtual Reality (VR) facilities, 3D scanners, laser cutters, 3D printers, and prototyping electronics. The RDF lab offers unique technology solutions for design, testing, prototyping, and fabrication. RDF is an extension of FIU’s Integrated Computer Augmented Virtual Environment (I-CAVE), which is a fully immersive and interactive facility. These facilities are designed to support diverse and innovative ways of using high-end visualization equipment for digital fabrication as well as advancing fabrication tools and methods with immersive technologies. Our goal is to create a supportive environment for learning and research through experimentation, collaboration, and access to some of the most advanced digital technologies. We aspire to become a catalyst for invigorating research, development, and entrepreneurship by bridging the gap between the virtual and physical world.

Position Description:

The RDF Lab and FIU Institute of Environment are working on a collaborative AR exhibition to highlight water issues of the Miami River and the Biscayne Bay. The project team will consist of several architectural design students and computer science students to develop the AR experience using a number of Microsoft Hololens headsets and iPads. We will be using the Unity game engine for the development of the content.

We are seeking to hire two dedicated computer science and/or data science students with an interest in AR/VR technologies to develop this important exhibition which will be seen by many experts and the general public.


20 hrs/week. The working schedule is flexible and negotiated with the supervisor.

Position Start

Starting immediately for the Spring 2022 semester with the option to extend to the next academic year.



  • Python
  • C# (For Unity)
  • Some Java


  • Basic understanding of Unity or Unreal Game Engines
  • iOS/Android mobile app development

* All hardware and software are provided by the RDF lab.

Position Duties:
  • Highly interested in learning and developing AR/VR experiences
  • Coordination with the supervisor
  • Coordination with the UI/UX team
  • Coordination with the 3D team for incorporating assets
  • User experience evaluation
  • Maintaining a GitHub repo
