The Office of Distance Education (ODE) is the online and distance education portal at the FIU College of Engineering and Computing. The college offers online and distance learning courses in support of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Lecture videos and materials are made available through a learning management system and can be accessed online anytime, anywhere. Many of the same courses offered on-campus are available through ODE, students receive the same credits and lecture materials as face-to-face students.
The Office of Distance Education at the College of Engineering and Computing, is recruiting a Technician Assistant who will assist with all aspects of the execution and operation of a college-wide distance education system and related instructional technologies. Monitoring and recording class lectures and video conferences using audiovisual production equipment, course capturing systems and software; maintaining quality control standards.
Providing customer service and support for students, faculty and staff including: emails, answering phones, and in-person assistance.
Demonstrating and training faculty on best practices for operating classroom media equipment, course capturing systems, and learning management system.
Ensuring that course delivery issues, maintenance, and repairs are logged and reported immediately to the appropriate department.
Maintaining courses on the Learning Management System daily, including: uploading course content, processing lecture videos, scanning and returning graded work.
Assisting with design, development, and maintenance of distance learning courses and materials.
Providing consultation and technical support of course delivery to faculty and students.
Performing inspections, testing, and troubleshooting of AV equipment and related technologies.
Corresponding with Division of IT, Engineering Information Center, FIU Online and external vendors for all related issues that affect operations of the program.
Assisting with proctoring of exams in compliance with FIU’s testing policies.
Updating department website and calendars, scheduling systems, and social media pages.
Maintaining of department inventory, work area, procedure manuals, and classrooms.
Performing other related duties as assigned or as directed.
IT background, experience with course capture technology and/or AV equipment.
Instructional technology knowledge; troubleshooting or helpdesk support experience.
Ability to analyze and troubleshoot various situations and respond accordingly; works efficiently as a team or independently.
Knowledge in Canvas LMS, Mediasite Video Platform, Adobe Creative Cloud, WordPress, Zoom/BlueJeans, Crestron/Polycom systems, HTML coding, scripting and programming.
Experience in video/photo-editing, video encoding, and Microsoft Office 365 and Sharepoint.
Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced and hands-on environment.
Detail oriented; excellent collaboration and organizational skills.
Ability to provide superior customer support in a personable and courteous manner.
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Student applicants must not be graduating within 2 semesters of initial employment.
