About the Company:

Breakthrough Miami is a comprehensive, tuition-free program that includes a six-week academic summer institute, school-year Saturday programming, year-round counseling, and continuing advocacy for students and their families until high school graduation. The program is designed to help middle school students overcome cultural, economic, and educational barriers that may hinder them from achieving their full academic potential. The goal of the program is to provide these students with the skills, encouragement, self-esteem and responsibility needed for academic success.

The Breakthrough Miami Teaching Fellow experience is designed for undergraduates and high school students (age 17+). The opportunity is available to applicants with a deep interest in social justice and a passion for working with students. Our Teaching Fellows must be committed to personal growth and comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Because we celebrate the diversity of our community, we seek applicants from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.

Position Duties:

Academic Responsibilities

  • Every Teaching Fellow will teach one academic subject (English, Math, Science or Social Studies) within the same grade level.
  • Teaching Fellows will be responsible for creating a six-week teaching plan, as well as daily lesson plans (with the support of a professional teacher.
  • Teaching Fellows will be formally observed by a professional teacher at least once a week, and will be expected to attend post-observation meetings with the teacher.
  • Teacher Fellows will be expected to do peer-observations throughout the course of the summer.


Exploratory Elective Responsibilities

  • All Teaching Fellows will design an elective course, and teach it twice daily. Electives allow Teaching Fellows to share their passions and hobbies with others; and provide students with the opportunity to be exposed to new ideas and interests. Past electives have included Cheer Dance, Step Dance, Photography, Improvisational Theatre, The History of Double Dutch, Speech & Debate, Sewing and Artistic Scavengers.


Team Responsibilities

  • Every Teaching Fellow will be assigned to a Team – similar to a homeroom. Each Team will consist of ten to twelve students and one to two Teaching Fellows. Teams serve a triple purpose – to efficiently manage the “housekeeping” details of the program, such as attendance, to serve as a safe space for advising/mentoring, and to develop a sense of community, spirit and camaraderie through team challenges.  Attendance and participation are mandatory.


Staff Meetings

  • Teaching Fellows must attend all scheduled program meetings for staff and academic departments.


Evaluation Week Responsibilities

  • Evaluation Week is the closing week of the summer. Teaching Fellows spend this week writing student evaluations, completing final program evaluations, reflecting on their experience, and cleaning staff rooms, classrooms and common areas.


Co-Curricular Program & Leadership Responsibilities

  • The co-curricular program refers to everything at Breakthrough Miami outside of academic classes. There are numerous opportunities for advising and building students’ interpersonal, leadership, problem solving, communication, and teamwork skills. An outline of various components of the co-curricular program is listed below. Teaching Fellows will have various responsibilities to fulfill within the co-curricular program depending upon their summer assignments and interests.
